Flying back to Honolulu was bittersweet for me. I was sad that the NYC Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was over, but grateful for the experience – especially the one that I had at the Vivienne Tam show. Unlike fashion shows in Hawaii that I’ve produced, the shows in NYC allow photographers, media and celebrities to gain access backstage and see what’s happening. It’s really part of the culture there. But at the Vivienne Tam show, I also received the rare chance to work backstage, under the direction of Hawaii’s-own Lynne O’Neill. This was huge! Bucket list huge! It’s like getting sideline seats at the Super Bowl.

Amid the organized chaos and distractions backstage, I stayed focused on the duties I was assigned from the production team: round up the models, get their shoes on before rehearsal, take the models from hair and makeup to first looks, and help line them up for the show. Sometimes we had less than a minute to change the models from their first look into their last look, with zippers, buttons, hair touch-ups, then right back into the line.

Needless to say, I was super busy backstage, but here are a few behind-the-scenes photos I was able to snap:

A little about Vivienne Tam:

Tam was born in China and raised in Hong Kong since the age of three. I really took notice of Tam’s career when she created a collection to auction off so that she could help the pandas that were affected by a devastating earthquake on May 12, 2008 in the Sichuan Province.

Her fall 2015 collection demonstrates that she is still the reigning queen of China-chic. I love her collection’s ornate prints, Victorian silhouettes and school-girl flare skirts – definitely east-meets-west but distinctly true to Tam’s cultural roots.

Neiman Marcus’ Trend Report fashion show

(From FrolicHawaii.com 2/20/2015) – Amanda Stevens

This week’s Trend Report fashion show at Neiman Marcus featured 2015 spring collections, showcasing the trends of new bohemian, spice market, mix don’t match and white on white.  I’ve attended Neiman Marcus runway shows for many seasons and it always serves as a fashion compass in Honolulu. Stylist Ann Smith transformed each look from youthful to 40-plus age-appropriate styles with a few creative tweaks: light jewelry or layers of jewelry; flat sandals or chunky platform flats; a mini dark-navy jacket or a mini washed-denim jacket.

Take a look at my favorite moments on the runway and after the show.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Mark and Estel collection

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Mark and Estel collection

“You are fashion rock stars, you are beautiful just the way you are!” Belted out by Mark Tango and Estel Day, the fashion and music duo of Mark and Estel, these words closed out their runway show. Performance has been the fabric of their brand since they launched in 2005. The press took notice early on when Mary-Kate Olsen started sporting their designs. Fame and attention ensued; in 2009 they custom-made the ‘Ripped & Holey Leggings’ for Lady Gaga’s Fame Ball Tour.

The duo’s Fall/Winter 2015 Stairway to the Stars collection made me want to host a royal rock ‘n roll ball when I get back to Honolulu – it oozed a rebellious rocker spirit with a grownup spin. ME-created herringbone, gingham and tartan prints in silks, wools and knits were the foundation of their ready-to-wear collection.

Here’s a look at my favorite moments before and during the show:

Traveling throughout Asia, Europe and America has given Mongol collection designer Bayarmaa Bayarkhuu a thirst for art, history and culture – and you’ll see this expressed in her collection.

“The main concept is sustainability,” Bayarkhuu says, “We use Mongolian lamb fur. They are fed on the open range and not slaughtered, the wool is sheared. We also use thick silk and cashmere.” Bayarkhuu’s collection seamlessly melds these traditional textures with contemporary silhouettes and allows women to have fun with its many designs and vibrant colors. “I design for the woman who is independent, confident and very international, who can make her own definition of fashion.”

Here are a few of my favorite fashion moments before, during and after the runway show:

The love series: Valentine’s ideas for single girls

(From FrolicHawaii.com 02/13/2015) – Amanda Stevens

Valentine’s Day can affect your mood depending on your relationship status, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I went through a single phase once where Cupid, red roses and chocolates were nowhere in sight, but I found a few things to do – with the help of my friends – to keep my mind preoccupied and entertained.

Here are a few anti-Valentine’s Day activities I recommend for you:

Plan a girls’ night out

Since “Fifty Shades of Grey” opens on Valentine’s Day, many of my single friends are checking out the flick together and turning it into an anti-Valentine’s Day girls’ night out. I suggest having dinner and a couple cocktails at a not-so-romantic restaurant, like Dave & Buster’s, then watching “Fifty Shades of Grey” and gossiping about it afterwards. It should be a great bonding activity – pun intended.http://www.youtube.com/embed/SfZWFDs0LxA?enablejsapi=1

Throw a house party

Celebrate your singleness by throwing a ladies-only Valentine’s Day party with themed martinis, appetizers and music. Here’s a list of girl power songs you should add to your playlist: “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift, “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyoncé, “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, and “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.

Stay off social

If you’re staying home on Valentine’s Day, steer clear of Facebook and Instagram. The last thing you want is to see a barrage of couples posting in your feeds about how much they love each other, or worse, flaunting their gifts.

Watch a scary movie

Avoid the Lifetime and Hallmark channel’s rom-com movies completely and do what I did:  binge-watch “Walking Dead” or any good scary movie. Trust me, it will keep you entertained and your mind so focused on its suspenseful plots that you’ll forget what day it is.

Spoil yourself

Get your makeup, hair and nails done with your friends while chatting about the fun things you’re going to do this weekend. A bunch of my single gal pals and I did this in the past on Valentine’s Day and it lifts your spirits and makes you feel great.

Honolulu Night + Market: Refresh

(From FrolicHawaii.com 01/18/2015) – Amanda Stevens

H

The first Honolulu Night + Market of 2015 kicked off Saturday with an emphasis on new beginnings through physical and spiritual well-being. Exciting new vendors, food trucks and features were introduced. Some fresh faces we spotted were fashion vendors Uptown Closet, operating out of a converted tour van; Brue Bar, with an innovative traveling coffee station operated by two of its employees; national bikesharing system Citibikes; a comic book table run by Other Realms; local painting genius Andy Lee working with students from Kamalamahoe; a gems and minerals table with rocks from all over the world; and the nearby BJ Penn UFC gym.

In addition, Night Market hosted a five-course pop-up dinner by Ho’oku’i Catering LLC, called INIHAW (Tagalog: To grill or cook over open fire). These new pop-up dinners are a unique dining experience in the middle of the event, located in the fashion alley behind the retail warehouses. Guests were seated and treated to grilled meats in traditional Filipino style with a modern twist, done up by Chef Abraham Jazmin.

Inihaw Pop-Up

The first Honolulu Night Market runway show of 2015 incorporated sleek monochromatic sportswear ensembles with strategically placed pops of color. University of Hawaii senior Rance China set the tone of the show, styling a strong first look, a black shawl top transformed into a hooded pseudo cardigan from Ten Tomorrow, tank by Vizume and valley glasses from We Are Iconic. The men’s looks had a super relaxed feel, with drop crotch joggers and pieces with fun zippers and innovative pockets. By far, my fave look of the night was a one-piece cutout swimsuit paired with a faux leather skirt from We Are Iconic, accessorized with a bullet necklace from About the Goods. The hair and makeup fully complemented the sportswear vibe, with aerodynamic hair themes and linear makeup lines by Risa Hoshino, Jasmine Mullins and Ashlee Valeros. Other shops and designers featured  in the runway show were Allison Izu, Rumi Murakami, Dolce, About the Goods and Basique Threads.

New Year glam makeup tips

(From FrolicHawaii.com 12/30/2014) – Amanda Stevens

Committing to getting in shape or updating your wardrobe in the new year are typical resolutions, but how many times do you hear people say, “I need to update the way I apply my makeup?” Perhaps, for some of us, it’s time.

Personally, I want to step up my game for Wednesday’s New Year’s Eve House of Cards soiree at The Modern Honolulu and steer clear of my usual makeup shortcuts. So I decided to partner with master makeup artist Jonathan Freitas and Eva Blacker of Premier Models & Talent to present seven makeup tips for 2015.

skin1. Skin: If you can commit to any one beauty regimen in 2015, it should be to take care of your skin, and hydrating is key. Drink plenty of water, especially if you are consuming alcohol. This will help make your skin glow from the inside. If your skin is dull or needs a little help to look soft and dewy, try a tinted moisturizer or foundation that has a soft glow to it. There are many foundations on the market to give you this look, but I like Motives Cosmetics custom blend foundation. Their beauty advisers can make you a perfectly matched foundation. They can even add your skin primer to your foundation. Freitas recommends not adding a powder over the foundation for the evening. If you are coming straight from work to your party, he suggests spritzing a little alcohol-free moisturizing toner (he likes Skintelligenceʻs Ph Normalizer) or a makeup setting spray to add more moisture and keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

2. Eyebrows: Be sure to keep the brows clean and neat. I see many gradient brows in editorials or on Instagram, but for 2015, let’s keep it simple. Just fill in your brows following your natural line. If you need help in the brows department, Iʻd suggest getting them waxed first and you can keep your brows clean by tweezing as the hair grows in. By the way, we tweeze our brows, plucking is for chickens.

eye shadow3. Eye shadow: We still want the eye shadow to be a soft color like a warm latte-like color or a nice soft brown just one or two shades darker than your skin tone. Take the color and sweep it across the lip from your crease to your lash line. Be sure to blend, blend, blend. It should give your eyes a little definition without looking harsh or smokey. It’s about being fun and flirty, not dark and twisty. Take a richer brown or hazelnut like color, and starting from the outside of your crease, sweep it towards your inner eye using a windshield like motion back and forth in the crease. Again, blend, blend, blend. You do not want to see where one color begins and the other ends. Be sure to keep the darker concentration of color on the outer two-thirds of your lid. The combination of these colors should be light and soft. We will be defining the eye with some dark liner and mascara.

eyes4. Liner: Use a dark espresso or black color eye pencil to line both your top and bottom lashes. Take a similar color eye shadow and a liner brush and smudge the color over the eye pencil to create a little smokey look around the eye. If you prefer, you can take the eye liner and color in the bottom of your waterline to give the eye some definition.

5. Finish the eyes by curling your lashes and adding some mascara, being careful not to apply too much to make your lashes look like spiders.

contour36. Cheeks: Some people aren’t sure how to pick a blush. Hereʻs a great trick Freitas teaches his clients: Squeeze your hand into a fist for a few seconds. Open your fist and look at the tips of your fingers. Have a few color blushes and compare your finger tips to the color blush. The one closest or a match is the blush color you should use on your cheeks. Be sure to smile and apply the blush to the apples of your cheek and again blend back towards your hairline.

lips7. Lip color: Here’s where you can really add the dramatic touch. In this photo Freitas used Orchid, the Pantone color of 2015. This shade of lipstick called Times Square by Motives Cosmetics is bright and bold, the perfect pop of color to ring in the New Year. He finishes the look by applying a clear lip plumper to fill in and add a little volume to Eva’s lips.

IMG_2499Voila! So now you have the know-how to step outside of your comfort zone and revamp your make-up application techniques in 2015.

Letters to Santa make wishes come true

(From FrolicHawaii.com 12/18/2014) – Amanda Stevens

Damon1

Macy’s and Make-A-Wish are celebrating the seventh year of the Believe campaign. Up to Dec. 24, people of all ages can bring their letters addressed to “Santa at The North Pole,” and drop it into the special letterboxes inside Macy’s. (You can also create and send a letter online at macys.com/believe.) For each letter received, Macy’s will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish, up to $1,000,000.

Damon3

Damon’s Wish
“There’s no crying in Macy’s!” That thought rang through my mind last Friday, while being among hundreds of onlookers who saw Make-A-Wish and Macy’s grant the wish of a young man named Damon at Ala Moana Center, as part of the Believe campaign.

Damon is from Kaneohe, and he struggles daily with progressive muscular dystrophy, a medical condition that made him eligible for a wish from Make-A-Wish Hawaii. He wished for a beach-accessible wheelchair, one that “looked cool” in true teenager form, but mostly, he wanted the ability to roll across the sand with more ease, something he couldn’t do with his standard chair.

Damon2

Damon’s wish that unfolded was among 50 wishes granted nationwide that day. A fun fact I learned from Jenna Blakely of Make-A-Wish Hawaii was that of those 50 wishes, 12 Wish Kids learned that their wishes to come to Hawaii are coming true. She also told me about recent wishes granted for other teens and children from Hawaii. Seriously, this is what the holidays are all about, take a look:

Tiare8-648x444

On Thanksgiving Day, Kailua teen Tiare, 16, battling chronic kidney disease, got to cheer on game day with the San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleaders.

Christian5-648x444

On Hawaii Island, Make-A-Wish Hawaii recently handed over the keys to teen Christian’s dream off-road Polaris vehicle. Christian, 17, battles a chronic kidney condition.

Sharai-648x444

Sharai, 14, of Keaau, who’s battling Hodgkins Lymphoma, recently returned from her Wish Trip to Australia, where she got to do an Animal Encounter.

So this holiday season, slow down and take a moment to write a letter to Santa, your wish will help to make wishes come true.

Urban Outfitters launches in Waikiki

By: Amanda Stevens Nov 29, 2014

Hawaii’s first Urban Outfitters store, which officially launches today, held its grand opening Friday, giving media and invited guests an early peek at the stylish, two-story space at the corner of Kalakaua and Kaiulani avenues in Waikiki.

Part of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki’s Atrium Shops, the new 13,000-square-foot shop is inviting and easy to navigate, with mini boutiques throughout the space. In keeping with its industrial-meets-art-loft vibe, the popular women’s and men’s fashion brand — known for its irreverent, indie and hipster styles — has added music listening stations throughout the store.

During my personal tour Friday afternoon, I was drawn to the gypsy vibe of the swimwear and crystal accessories. The clothes fit our island lifestyle, yet UO is not afraid to offer interesting outerwear, which I found refreshing. I spotted Southwestern-style ponchos in the $60 price range; party dresses starting at $80; and I was tempted to splurge on a rattlesnake belt for about $100. There’s also an array of amethyst and crystal goods randomly placed throughout the store, which adds to the mysterious gypsy Southwestern vibe.

On the second floor, there’s a good amount of fun tees in the $30 range, along with mobile tech supplies and quirky books — perfect for Christmas gifts. The men’s selection is impressive with offerings of denim joggers under $100. There’s also an entire section with intimate wear that’s edgy and sexy, but doesn’t try too hard. Seriously, this store has everything.

Before you leave, take a look at the hanging art and mural by Pow!Wow! artist Kristin Farr.
